UNESCO hosts Nowruz world festivity

Nowruz World Festivity sponsored by Iran’s permanent representative has been held in UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

Representatives of 12 member countries of Nowruz world registration dossier took part at the event.

The Iranian ambassador presented a report for setting Jalali Calender in year 1078 AC by scientific efforts and works of a number of Iranian mathematicians and scientists.

He also read out a poem from the great Persian poet Mowlavi (Rumi) about Nowruz during the ceremony where many member-states’ ambassadors and representatives were present.

Iran is responsible for coordination for Nowruz registration in UNESCO’s World List of Intangible Heritage.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Director General Irina Bokova sent a message to the ceremony, describing the festivity as a cause for promoting peace and solidarity among regions and generations.

Some great figures such as Omar Khayyam, Abul-Mozzafar Esfazari, Najib Wasti, Abdulrahman Khazeni, Abul-Abbas Lokari and Mamori Beyhaqi in Isfahan are among the scientists who made the Jalali calendar.

The UN General Assembly approved World Day of Nowruz in 2010.

The 12 member-states of the Nowruz Dossier are Iran, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan Republic, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and India.
